Vicksburg National Military Park and a History Lesson

On our way home from the Mississippi Lightheart's farm we stopped at the Vicksburg National Military Park commemorating the civil war battle for control of the "Mighty Mississippi" and ultimately the war. It was an amazing trip through 16 miles of monuments and memorials honoring the more than 100,000 men and boys, from both sides, who fought in this epic battle that lasted 40 days and finally ended by seige. General Sherman and General Grant both actively participated which made it all the more fascinating. They truly were inspired men because their strategy had to be so intricate to overcome the unforgiving terrain and the almost impregnable fortification of the confederate army. We loved seeing the "Gibraltar of the West" and reliving a part of history that shaped our nation.
